1. Who we are

Sortd is a South African online marketplace based in Cape Town. We connect homeowners with independent contractors for everyday tasks and services. For all privacy matters, contact us at hello@sortdapp.co.za.

2. Information we collect

When you register or use Sortd, we may collect:

• Identity information: Full name
• Contact information: Phone number, email address
• Location information: Suburb or service area
• Profile information: Skills, bio, hourly rate, profile photo
• Usage data: Tasks posted, offers made, messages sent, ratings received
• Device information: Push notification token (mobile app only)

We do not collect payment information. All payments happen directly between users off-platform.

3. Why we collect your information

We use your personal information only for the following purposes:

• Creating and managing your account
• Matching task posters with suitable contractors in their area
• Sending notifications about relevant jobs, offers, and messages
• Verifying contractor profiles before they go live
• Moderating content and enforcing our community guidelines
• Communicating platform updates and service information

4. Lawful basis for processing

Under POPIA, we process your personal information on the following grounds:

• Contract performance: To provide the marketplace service you signed up for
• Legitimate interest: To improve the platform, prevent fraud, and keep the community safe
• Consent: For marketing communications (you may opt out at any time)

5. How we share your information

We do not sell your personal information. We share limited information only in the following circumstances:

• Between matched users: When a task is assigned, the Poster and Tasker see each other's name and phone number to coordinate the job.
• Service providers: We use Supabase (database and authentication) and Expo (push notifications). These providers process data on our behalf and are bound by their own privacy policies.
• Legal requirements: If required by South African law or a court order.

6. Data storage and security

Your data is stored on Supabase's servers. Supabase is SOC 2 Type II certified and stores data in secure data centres. We use industry-standard encryption for data in transit (HTTPS) and at rest.

No method of electronic storage is 100% secure. While we take reasonable precautions, we cannot guarantee absolute security.

7. Your rights under POPIA

As a data subject under POPIA, you have the right to:

• Access the personal information we hold about you
• Correct inaccurate or outdated information
• Delete your account and associated personal information
• Object to the processing of your information for direct marketing
• Complain to the Information Regulator of South Africa if you believe your rights have been violated

8. Information Regulator

If you are not satisfied with how we handle your personal information, you may lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator of South Africa:

9. Retention

We retain your personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide our services. If you delete your account, we will remove your personal information within 30 days, except where we are required by law to retain it longer.

10. Cookies

The Sortd website uses session cookies only for authentication purposes. We do not use tracking cookies or third-party advertising cookies.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We will notify users of material changes via the app or email. Continued use of Sortd after changes are posted constitutes acceptance.
